My husband and I recently moved into our first home. We married two and half years ago- at that time we were both still college students. We started living in a little one-bedroom 450 sq. ft. apartment. I remember how much of an adjustment it was to go from living with my parents in a large house to a place with only three rooms. But I did LOVE living with Zach for the first time!! I remember feeling, for the first few months, that Zach and I were playing house, like I used to play when I was little except for real. We had so much fun together in our little apartment. As we finished up school and started our own business, our first “love nest” began to lose some of its charm.
We were running out of storage space at a drastically increasing rate. It was really hard to have people over because of the size of our, three in one, Kitchen/dinning/living room. And the office for our business was actually our bed room/office. The heating/Air conditioning unit was a wall unit, much like one you would see in a hotel. And although there were laundry rooms in the back of the building we took our laundry to my mom’s house all the time; I didn’t trust the apartment machines.
We started looking around for homes in our price range and soon found a new condo development which was pretty close to our less than charming “love nest”. I remember the first time we looked at one of the condos; we almost teared up looking at the thermostat. In our apartment we had to use two fans to blow air conditioning into the “master suite”.
After looking at new construction it is hard to imagine buying something older, we had seen some older condos; they were more expensive and not nearly as nice. So in October we signed contracts to buy a brand new condo. The builder told us that the projected finish date was January 15 2008. Over the next five months we learned that building over the winter months is not the smoothest process ever, and therefore sufficed to say we didn’t close in January. But we did have fun picking out the colors and flooring and lighting for out new place. We finally moved in on March 29, 2008. It was about two or so months later than expected.
Our new place is 1250 sq. ft. and I told Zach that it might as well be a castle for how much I love it!! I have a real kitchen with a gas stove, we have our own laundry, we have central heating and air, and Zach’s office in no longer in our bedroom. It’s beautiful, and brand new!! The other day we were talking about going out of town for a day or two and as we were discussing places we could stay Zach said “yeah, but the problem is that now that we have such a nice home it’s not as exciting to go away.” I thought that summed up how nice it is to be in our new home very well. It’s been a month now and we still walk around saying “isn’t it nice to be here.” And “it’s so beautiful!” My feeling is has been that our new place not just a place to live, but a home.
